Ebony, Jet, Onyx, Raven, Charcoal, Graphite, Slate and Anthracite. What do these words have in common? They’re all synonyms for the ever-popular colours of black and grey.
October is the start of cozy and spooky season, so why not delve into the dark side? It’s a whole mood…chic, sleek, elegant and mysterious.

Here’s some design ideas to add panache to a dark-as-night kitchen:
- Create a bi-color kitchen with dark lower cabinets, then soften overall effect with light uppers in a solid colour or wood-finish.
- A black and white tiled backsplash or floor is striking and classical.
- Achromatic colour schemes of black, white and grey are neutral and will stand the test of time.
- Play with different metals. Satin Gold hardware will create a luxury ‘Art Deco’ effect and stand out like jewelry. Brushed Nickel lends a modern industrial vibe while Gunmetal creates a soothing monochromatic effect.
- Tiled backsplash with black grout. Swap out light grout for dark. It makes a big impact and, most importantly, it’s easier to keep looking clean.
- White countertops are clean, crisp and a perfect foil for the darker cabinetry that surrounds it.
- Add pops of color for a dopamine hit. Brightly hued accents and accessories are playful and pop against the stark darkness.
- Rustic accents add warmth such as terracotta floor tiles, woven baskets, traditional kilim rugs, ceramics or any type of artisanal décor piece.
- Ceiling beams that match the cabinetry create continuity and draws the eye upward.
- Patterned wallpaper adds artistic finesse. Try a textured paper, large geometric pattern or a smaller and more subdued print.
- Dark stained wood floors paired with dark cabinetry work best on a larger, open-plan space since an all-dark palette can overwhelm a smaller kitchen.
